Green Tea Donuts Recipe | Sugimoto Tea Company

Mildly sweet and deliciously crispy, these donuts have a strong tea flavor that shines through and pairs well with freshly brewed tea. Here's how to make these green tea donuts.

How to Make Green Tea Donuts

Ingredients

Makes about 6-8 donuts

Prep time: 90 minutes

Cooking time: 10 minutes

  • 1 Tbsp Matcha or Hojicha Powder
  • 1/2 cup sifted cake flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp room temperature butter
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for garnish

Step 1: Sift the Powdered Ingredients

Sift tea powder, cake flour, baking powder, and salt together to remove clumps and mix well without clumping.

Step 2: Mix the Egg, Sugar, and Butter

Mix the egg with brown sugar and butter separately.

Step 3: Combine the Dry and Wet Ingredients

Gently combine the wet ingredients with the dry and mix well so that there are no clumps.

Step 4: Shape the Dough

Shape the mixture into a ball in the bowl, cover with plastic film to keep moist, and chill in the fridge for an hour.

Use an ice cream scoop to form dough into 1-2 inch balls.

Step 5: Heat the Oil

Using a frying thermometer, heat vegetable oil to 375°F.

Step 6: Fry

Fry dough in hot oil until the donuts rise to the surface and are crispy and brown. It'll be hard to see when this happens with the Hojicha donuts, but it should only take 2-3 minutes. Make sure to turn while drying so the donuts are cooked evenly.

Step 7: Serve

Set on paper towels to soak excess oil. Garnish with powdered tea and powdered sugar.
