Description

Now available in a 50g bag for a limited time.

Made from a blend of Yabukita from Fujieda in Shizuoka Prefecture and Tanegashima in Kagoshima Prefecture, this single-cultivar Wakoucha is a stunning demonstration of rare Japanese black teas. It has a clean amber red hue when brewed, and the aroma is sweet and floral with notes of honey. The flavor has a prominent malty sweetness with notes of chrysanthemum and a hint of stone fruit.

Our Wakoucha is a blend of leaves grown by the Iizuka family and the Matsushita family. The Iizuka family is a pioneer of organic tea farming in Japan, having started using organic farming techniques nearly 50 years ago. The Matsushita family began pesticide-reduced farming in 2003 when it became apparent that their fifth generation heir was suffering from a pesticide allergy. They then made the switch to organic farming in 2012 and began producing Wakoucha the same year at the request of a family member. Since the best Wakoucha comes from the summer harvest, the time of year when the tea plants are hardest hit by pests, and because of limited production, large quantities of this premium Wakoucha are hard to come by.
