Description
This silver-coated handleless teapot showcases the artistry of Japanese craftsmanship, combining intricate detailing with functional design. Starting as pure white porcelain, the piece is delicately hand-carved using the traditional tobikanna technique, creating unique, rhythmic patterns.
A fine layer of silver is then brushed onto its surface and fired at high temperatures, resulting in a luminous, polished finish that highlights its intricate texture. The hand-carving process ensures that no two houhin are identical, making each piece truly one of a kind.
Designed for brewing Japanese teas, this houhin is as practical as it is beautiful, offering an exceptional brewing experience while honoring the traditions of fine teaware.
About Arita-yaki
Arita-yaki is a type of Japanese porcelain ware that is said to have originated in 1616 when Korean artisan Lee Sanpei discovered kaolin clay in Arita, Japan. This rare white clay, which transforms into porcelain when fired at high temperatures, allowed Japan to produce porcelain for the first time. Known for its high quality, Arita-yaki became highly prized both in Japan and Europe, where it was exported by the Dutch East India Company. Its influence on European ceramics, including the renowned Meissen porcelain, has made Arita-yaki a significant part of ceramic history.
About Risogama
Established in 1897 on land that once belonged to Lee Sanpei, the father of Arita-yaki, Risogama incorporates the kanji "Ri" from Lee’s name as a tribute to his influence. Now run by fourth-generation president Shinji Terauchi, Risogama emphasizes creating pottery that connects personally with users. Shinji’s philosophy of “listening to the voices of the users” drives the company’s mission to craft high-quality, meaningful Arita-yaki that bridges tradition and innovation.

Care Instructions for Silver Teaware
Please note that silver naturally oxidizes and may develop a patina, adding character to the piece. Follow these tips to care for your teaware:
- Hand Wash Only - Do not place in the dishwasher and avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh detergents and chemicals.
- Dry Immediately - After washing, use a soft cloth to dry your teaware thoroughly. Leaving water or tea droplets on the surface can accelerate oxidation.
- Expect Natural Oxidation - Silver will naturally oxidize and turn black, we hope you enjoy experiencing this change as we feel it adds to the product’s charm.
Important Safety Notice: Do not use in the microwave. The silver coating can cause sparks or damage to both the teaware and the appliance.
How to Polish Oxidized Silver Teaware
- Place a sheet of aluminum foil that has been crumpled up, and spread it out over a wide-bottomed pot large enough to cover the teaware with water.
- Fill the pot with enough water to cover the teaware and bring to a boil.
- Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of salt or baking soda and stir lightly. Adjust the amount of baking soda if using a larger pot.
- Soak the dishes for a few minutes.
- Carefully remove from the pot and dry with a cloth.
- Polish with silver polishing paper if necessary.
